Why Norova

A considered approach to the classical interior

We draw on the Southeast Asian classical tradition — Peranakan, colonial, and the broader Western canon — and read it carefully for present-day use. The result is rooms that feel settled rather than staged.

Regional Classical Literacy

We work across Peranakan, British colonial, and European classical traditions — reading each with care rather than applying them as surface decoration.

Measured Proportions

Every room is composed around proportion first. Ceiling heights, trim ratios, and furniture placement follow classical principles adapted to the Malaysian context.

Joinery-Ready Documentation

Our drawings are prepared with local joiners and craftspeople in mind — clear enough to be quoted from, detailed enough to hold the design through production.

Fabric and Finish Curation

Fabrics, lacquers, and hardware are chosen in relation to each other, not selected in isolation. We carry a working knowledge of what ages well in the Malaysian climate.

Restorer and Supplier Network

We maintain relationships with restorers, antique dealers, and fabric houses across the Klang Valley and Penang — connections built over years of careful sourcing.

Designed for the Long Term

Our clients are not decorating for now. We plan rooms intended to accommodate changing life while remaining in good taste — a permanent investment in how a space feels.

Questions

Commonly Asked

Practical answers about how we work, what each service covers, and what to expect.

What does the Concept Brief actually produce?
The brief package gives you a written design direction document — the approach, the references, the palette, and the mood — alongside a visual board and a draft room layout. Two consultations are built in so we can take in your feedback before the document is finalised. It is the right starting point if you are still forming your direction, or if you need a clear articulation of the brief before engaging a contractor.
How detailed is the documentation package?
The documentation package is prepared to a standard that a careful joiner or contractor can price and build from. It covers layout drawings, joinery elevations with profile notes, ceiling and cornice detailing, lighting positions, finish schedules, and 3D perspective views of key rooms. The note on care of traditional materials is included as a reference document for the client, not the contractor.
Do you work with existing furniture or only new pieces?
We work with both. In many classical projects, existing furniture — family pieces, inherited antiques, or items with personal significance — is a central element rather than an afterthought. The Sourcing and Procurement Liaison includes restorer coordination, and we are comfortable building a scheme around pieces already in the room.
What is the typical timeline for each service?
The Concept Brief typically takes three to four weeks from the first consultation to the final document. The Documentation package runs eight to twelve weeks, depending on scope and how many rooms are included. The Sourcing and Procurement Liaison is open-ended by nature — it follows the pace of the project — but most clients work with us over a period of two to four months from the first sourcing round through installation.
Can I engage just one service, or do I need all three?
Each service stands on its own. Some clients come to us for the brief only and then take that document to their own contractor. Others begin with documentation and manage their own sourcing. We are comfortable working at whatever level is useful — and if you are uncertain which applies to your situation, a short conversation usually clarifies it.
How do I know if the classical style is appropriate for my home?
Classical design is not a single fixed style — it encompasses a wide range of historical traditions, from restrained British colonial to the exuberant colour of Peranakan interiors. Part of what we do in the Concept Brief is establish which thread of the classical tradition best suits your architecture, your collection, and your everyday life. The style adapts; the principles of proportion and material quality hold across all of it.
